[1st Anniversary Exhibition] Sebastian Masuda "KAWAIITOPIA -GO TO HEAVEN(HELL)-"
Sebastian Masuda is a leading figure in the Japanese pop culture genre "KAWAII," with fans worldwide. Currently based in both New York and Tokyo, he has been involved in theater and contemporary art since the early 1990s. He held a solo exhibition in New York in 2014 and has since participated in numerous exhibitions at art spaces, museums, and international art festivals both in Japan and abroad, earning him critical acclaim. Inspired by his vibrant color sense, he opened the shop "6%DOKIDOKI" in Harajuku in 1995 as a platform for his own expression. Since then, he has expanded his creative horizons to include fashion, entertainment, and product development. His exceptional talents include designing the music video for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's debut, directing her live performances, and producing the Harajuku "KAWAII MONSTER CAFE," helping to raise awareness of "KAWAII" around the world.
This exhibition is his first large-scale exhibition in five years, and is being held at a special time, marking the 30th anniversary of the opening of his Harajuku base, 6%DOKIDOKI.
This 1st-anniversary exhibition features "KAWAII-CORE ISLAND," a pink KAWAII sanctuary floating on Lake Miyazawa, and a giant tower, "Polychromatic Skin -Gender Tower-," at the entrance. Inside, visitors can experience "The Seven KAWAII Hells," a journey through Sebastian Masuda's formative experiences—an immersive experience where one encounters the heart of KAWAII after overcoming internal conflicts. The exhibition also includes a limited-time pop-up shop selling KAWAII goods and a photo booth.
