"Iceland's women's strike marks 50 years - with success after success"
Thoughts on the ongoing recurrence of "Women's Day Off"

On October 24, 1975, Icelandic women rose up, quit their housework and work, and took to the streets en masse. The "Women's Strike/Women's Day (Kvennaverkfall/Kvennafrí)," which was said to have been attended by 90% of women at the time, has continued ever since, and this year marks its 50th anniversary. In a country that is considered a "model student" in terms of gender equality, they continue to fight to this day. We consider what we living in Japan have overlooked about this striking "Women's Strike."

About "We Can Do It! We Can Do It! We Will Definitely Do It!: Women's Holidays in Iceland" (Yugi Shobo, 2025)

[Nominated for the Icelandic Women's Literature Award 2023] and many others.
On October 24, 1975, 90% of Icelandic women gave up their work and home responsibilities.
A mother tells her daughter about the day she took part in a mass strike known as "Women's Day Off," and the story is portrayed in a light-hearted and humorous way.
<Synopsis>
Vera, a young girl who looks like she is about elementary school age, is going to this year's Women's Day (women's strike) with her mother. Her mother tells her about the day when she was a child and took her to the Women's Day on October 24, 1975.
Why did the women decide to strike?
In the past, only boys were allowed to go to school, and even as girls went to school and more women began working outside the home, women were still responsible for caring for the family and earned half the salary of men.
In 1975, the United Nations declared the year "International Women's Year," and Icelandic women took action.
I thought, "It's time to show the world what an important role women play in society!"
--Imagine what would happen if half of society took a day off from all work and responsibilities.
Women from all walks of life - housewives, office workers, government workers, farmers, fishing boat workers, seniors, students, and people living in the capital Reykjavik as well as in small towns in the countryside - took part in this historic strike, a "Women's Day Off."
Amazingly, "90% of Icelandic women have abandoned their home and workplace responsibilities."
The film powerfully depicts this proud day, while also lightly portraying the "long Fridays" faced by men and fathers who suddenly find themselves taking on the responsibilities of babysitting and housework.

About the School for Housewives

Cooking, laundry, cleaning, sewing, knitting, embroidery, mending holes, ironing, how to use a fire extinguisher...
The School of Housewives in Iceland, a Nordic country that has been in operation since 1942, teaches practical household skills covering all aspects of life.
What began as a school to train young women to be good housewives began accepting male students in the 1970s, becoming coeducational. Regardless of gender, students who wanted to become people who could take care of themselves gathered in search of wisdom and skills to "live in the present," and the school's role changed to teaching "how to enjoy an independent life."
What does it mean to be a housewife? What does it mean to treat housework as one's own responsibility and to value one's daily life?
A documentary from Iceland, which has been ranked number one on the Gender Gap Index for 16 consecutive years, that gently questions lifestyles and housework.

About YARN: Threads that Color Your Life

Amid the global craft boom, this craft art documentary follows four artists from Iceland, a northern European country where knitting is deeply rooted in daily life, who have found life in yarn. Olek, who strolls the streets with a group of people dressed entirely in knitwear, proclaiming that "knitting is language, it's communication," Circus Cirkuru, who performs a transcendent performance using white yarn as a metaphor for life, Tina, who travels the world as a yarn graffiti artist, guerrilla-style decorating cities with knitwear, and Noriko Horiuchi, who continues to create colorful net playground equipment around the world that stimulates children's imaginations... This ambitious film not only entertains viewers with the colorful handiwork and performances of these artists, but also carefully depicts their passion to elevate knitting from a handicraft to an art that "connects people," interspersed with original animation.

"Moon Wolves"

The forest is home to many strange and wonderful creatures, but there are some that are especially special. These creatures don't remember when they first developed a love for sparkly and shiny things, or even when they became known as Moon Wolves. What they do know is that they love lamps, coins, knights and weapons, stars, and their best friends, fireflies. But more than anything, they love the moon. Every night, the Moon Wolves gaze dreamily at the moon. One night, their yearning for the moon becomes so strong that they can no longer just sit and stare. They decide to go to the moon.

About Eero Grundström

A harmonica player deeply rooted in the traditional music of Karelia, eastern Finland. Drawing on real dance music and traditions such as the kantele, accordion, and yohikko (a traditional bowed string instrument), he creates "imaginary Karelian harmonica music" by fusing it with ancient harmonica playing techniques from the American South. His sound world, where East Karelia and Mississippi intertwine, is full of ancient melodies and improvisation, always rooted in the "rhythms of dance." He plays a unique, powerful, and deep sound using a specially tuned, low-pitched blues harmonica.
